Welcome to GIDAS

Here you will learn more about the GIDAS
(German In-Depth Accident Study) project, the largest accident data collection project in Germany.

The data collected by an interdisciplinary team cover various aspects of an accident, such as accident kinematics or injuries. GIDAS is the foundation for various stakeholders (e.g. manufactures, research institutes or suppliers) to improve traffic and vehicle safety. A well-defined sampling procedure ensures the representativeness of the data with regard to federal accident statistics.

Since July 1999, the GIDAS project has been collecting around 2000 traffic accidents involving personal injury per year in the Hannover and Dresden metropolitan areas. The project is supported by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) and the Forschungsvereinigung Automobiltechnik e.V. (Research Association for Automotive Technology). (FAT). Details on the financing and composition of the project committee can be found under the menu item "About GIDAS".

The accident surveys and reconstructions are carried out by two research institutes, the Traffic Accident Research at TU Dresden (VUFO) and the Accident Research at Hannover Medical School.
