GIDAS is one of the most intensive researching projects for road traffic accident studies worldwide. Real traffic accidents are documented, reconstructed and simulated. By analyzing the GIDAS data, the legislator can closely monitor the road safety and can detect positive and negative trends. The automotive industry has the chance to improve their technology to ensure road safety for all road users.

GIDAS is a joint project between the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) and the German Association for Research in Automobile Technology (FAT).

Already before GIDAS, accident data was collected in Hannover. With the beginning of GIDAS in 1999, collecting accident data has been established in Dresden.
